Charles J. Lockwood, MD, MHCM, has been named as dean of The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Medicine. He joins OSU from Yale University School of Medicine, where he served for nine years as the Anita O'Keeffe Young Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences. Dr. Lockwood will also serve as vice president for health sciences.
Dr. Lockwood's primary clinical interests include preterm delivery, maternal thrombophilias, and the prevention of recurrent pregnancy loss. He is recognized for his contribution to the development of fetal fibronectin, and his research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health and the March of Dimes, as well as private foundations.
After earning his MD at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Lockwood completed residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Pennsylvania Hospital and a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the Yale-New Haven Hospital. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in coagulation at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, where he then served as Director of Perinatal Research. Prior to joining the faculty at Yale, Dr. Lockwood was chair of OB/GYN at New York University. He earned his MS from the Harvard School of Public Health.
Dr. Lockwood is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies and Sigma Xi and Alpha Omega Alpha honor societies. He is the past chair of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists' Committee on Obstetrical Practice and ACOG's document review committee. He has also served as secretary-treasurer and president of the Society for Gynecologic Investigation.
Johns Hopkins Medicine Names Vice Dean for Research
Landon S. King, MD, David Marine Professor of medicine and biological chemistry and director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, has been appointed vice dean for research at Johns Hopkins Medicine. His appointment was effective on September 1. He succeeds Chi Van Dang, MD, professor of medicine, cell biology, oncology and pathology and the Johns Hopkins Family Professor. Dr. Dang accepted a post as director of the University of Pennsylvania Abramson Cancer Center. As Vice Dean for Research, Dr. King will lead the School of Medicine's basic and translational research and will facilitate collaborative research opportunities across Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Dr. King's work has focused on regulation and function of aquaporin water channel proteins. His current work is on mechanisms of recovery following lung injury and on the role of water channels in lung function. He is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation.
Dr. King completed his MD at Vanderbilt University. He joined Johns Hopkins in 1989 as an intern in the Osler Medical service, and subsequently served as resident and assistant chief of service. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Peter Agre, MD, who was awarded the 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on aquaporin water channels. Dr. King has served as director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Medicine since 2005.
UK Names New Dean, VP for Clinical Academic Affairs
Frederick C. de Beer, MD, Jack M. Gill Professor of Medicine and chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Kentucky (UK), has been appointed dean of the College of Medicine and vice president for Clinical Academic Affairs. He succeeds Jay Perman, MD, who became president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, in 2010. Emery Wilson, MD, served as interim dean.
A rheumatologist, Dr. de Beer's research interests include histidine decarboxylase (HDC) metabolism and acute phase proteins. He earned his MD at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and completed postgraduate education at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London. He served at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa before joining the UK faculty in 1989.
Dr. de Beer was appointed chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Molecular Medicine at the UK College of Medicine in 1993. During his career at UK, he has also served as vice chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, director of the UK Graduate Center for Nutritional Sciences, and chief of medicine at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Lexington.
GWU School of Public Health and Health Services Names Department of Health Policy Chair
The George Washington University (GWU) School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS) has named Paula Lantz, PhD, Chair of the Department of Health Policy. She succeeds the outgoing chair, Sara Rosenbaum, JD, who will remain at SPHHS as the Harold and Jane Hirsh Professor of Health Law, with additional appointments in the Schools of Law and Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. Lantz joins GWU from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, where she served as chair in the Department of Health Management and Policy and the S.J. Axelrod Collegiate Professor of Health Management and Policy.
Dr. Lantz's research has focused on areas within population health, including cancer prevention and treatment, socioeconomic and racial/ethnic disparities in health status, and organizational and policy issues, such as health care reform. She has received funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At the University of Michigan, Dr. Lantz served as head of the Robert Wood Johnson Scholars in Health Policy Research Fellowship Program.
Dr. Lantz earned her PhD in Social Demography and an MS in Epidemiology at the University of Wisconsin. She also holds an MA in Sociology from Washington University.
GWU School of Medicine and Health Sciences Names Department of Neurology Chair
The George Washington University (GWU) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) has named Henry J. Kaminski, MD, as the Meta Amalia Neumann Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurology. He succeeds the outgoing chair, John J. Kelly, MD, who served in the post for two decades. Samuel J. Potolicchio Jr., MD, Director of the Neurophysiology Center and Co-Director of the Center for Sleep Disorders, served as interim chair prior to Dr. Kaminski's arrival at GWU in September.
Dr. Kaminski joins GWU from St. Louis University (SLU), where he served as professor and chair of the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry and director of the Clinical Research Unit. He is known for his research and treatment of myasthenia gravis, specifically for his contribution to understanding the biology and pathogenesis of the disorder. His work has been supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 1993.
Dr. Kaminski earned his MD from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine. He completed internship in Internal Medicine and residency in Neurology at the University Hospitals of Cleveland. Prior to joining SLU in 2007, Dr. Kaminski served as Vice Chair and Professor of Neurology and Professor of Neurosciences at CWRU, and he serviced as Chief of the Neurology Service at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center.
Dr. Kaminski is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology. He is chair of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, vice president of the Association of University Professors of Neurology, and serves as councilor for the American Neurological Association. Dr. Kaminski is the editor of Myasthenia Gravis and Related Disorders, currently in its second edition, and of Neuromuscular Disorders in Clinical Practice.
Indiana University Names Chair of New Biostatistics Department
Barry P. Katz, PhD, has been appointed as the inaugural chair of the Indiana University (IU) Department of Biostatistics. He has served as director of the Division of Biostatistics, which recently became an independent department, since 1995. Dr. Katz is also a professor of biostatistics and adjunct professor of public health at the IU School of Medicine and of preventative and community dentistry at the IU School of Dentistry.
Dr. Katz joined IU in 1984. His research has focused in the areas of rheumatology, dentistry and sexually transmitted diseases (STD). He has served as director of the Biostatistics Core for the Midwest STD Research Center and the Mid-America Adolescent STD Research Center. Dr. Katz earned his PhD in Biostatistics from the University of Michigan.
Penn Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine Chair Appointed
Jill M. Baren, MD, has been appointed as chair of the department of Emergency Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She succeeds William G. Baxt, MD, who has served as chair since the department was established in 1994. Dr. Baren is an expert in pediatric emergency medicine, and she holds appointments as professor of Emergency Medicine and of Pediatrics. She has served on the faculty at Penn since 1997.
Dr. Baren received her MD from the University of Pittsburgh, and she holds a master's degree in Bioethics from Penn. She completed an internship and residency in Emergency Medicine and a fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Harbor-University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical Center. She also served as a clinical instructor of Pediatrics and Medicine (Emergency Medicine) at the UCLA School of Medicine.
During her tenure at Penn, Dr. Baren has developed a multidisciplinary research consortium known as the Greater Philadelphia-Southern New Jersey Neurological Emergencies Treatment Trials Network, funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She has led clinical trials related to neurological emergencies in pediatric and adult patients, and has also investigated the ethical aspects of these trials. She is known for her expertise in the areas of informed consent issues in emergency medicine research, bioethical issues in resuscitation, and end-of-life issues as related to emergency medicine. Dr. Baren is a past president of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine.
UAB Names New Director of Cardiology
Sumanth D. Prabhu, MD, has been appointed as professor and director of the Division of Cardiovascular Disease at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine. He succeeds Ami Iskandrian, MD, who was serving as interim director. Dr. Prabhu joins UAB from the University of Louisville, where he served as a professor and University Scholar in the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. He was also chief of the section on cardiology, medical director of the heart failure program, director of heart failure and transplant research and of the preventive cardiology clinic at the University of Louisville Hospital.
Dr. Prabhu earned his MD at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA. He completed internship, residency and a Physician Investigator Research Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, and a cardiovascular disease fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Dr. Prabu's research is focused on pathophysiological mechanisms in heart failure - in particular, on those related to left ventricular function, chamber remodeling, inflammation, and oxidative stress.
UAMS Appoints Chair of Department of Pathology
Jennifer L. Hunt, MD, has been appointed chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Services in the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). She joins UAMS from Harvard Medical School (HMS), where she served as associate professor of pathology and was associate chief of pathology and chief of anatomic and molecular pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr. Hunt is an expert in head and neck, endocrine, and molecular anatomic pathology. Dr. Hunt earned her MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. She completed residency in anatomic pathology and a fellowship in molecular genetic pathology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She also holds a master's degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. She previously served as an assistant professor in pathology and laboratory medicine and otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Prior to her service at HMS, Dr. Hunt was an associate professor in pathology and laboratory medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University.
Dean's Professorship in Childhood Diabetes Research Named at the UC Davis School of Medicine
Pediatric endocrinologist, Nicole Glaser, MD, has been named to the Dean's Professorship in Childhood Diabetes Research at the University of California (UC) Davis School of Medicine. Dr. Glaser has served on the UC Davis faculty since 1997. During her tenure, she has been recognized with the Outstanding Teaching, Outstanding Role Model and Outstanding Fellow awards from the Department of Pediatrics.
Dr. Glaser's research interests include treating children and adolescents with diabetic ketoacidosis, pediatric hyperthyroidism, diabetes and other endocrine disorders. Her work is supported by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Development, a part of the National Institutes of Health, as well as the American Diabetes Association and the Children's Miracle Network. Dr. Glaser earned her MD from Harvard Medical School. She completed residency at Children's Hospital Boston and fellowship at the University of San Diego Medical Center.
University of Louisville Appoints New Chair of Urology
Murali Ankem, MD, has been named as the new chair of Urology at the University of Louisville. He joins the University of Louisville from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he served as director of minimally invasive surgery in the department of urology. Dr. Ankem's areas of specialty interest include endourology, urologic laparoscopy, and robotic surgery.
Dr. Ankem earned his MD at the Rangaraya Medical College in India. He completed internship at General Hospital in Kakinada, India, and residency at institutions in India and the United States, including the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. He was a fellow in urology at Monash Medical Center in Melbourne, Australia, and in endourology and laparoscopy at the University of Wisconsin Medical School. Prior to his service at UMDNJ, Dr. Ankem served as assistant professor of urology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and was chief of urology services at Overton Brooks Medical Center.
University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Appoints Director of Lung Cancer Section
Mark A. Socinski, MD, has been appointed director of the Lung Cancer Section of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He will also hold appointments as co-director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's (UPMC) Center for Excellence in Lung Cancer and co-director of the Lung and Thoracic Malignancies Program at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI), and is the first faculty member of the school's Department of Medicine to hold a joint appointment as professor of surgery in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He joins the University of Pittsburgh from the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill and the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, where served as professor of medicine in the Division of Hematology-Oncology and director of the Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Program.
Dr. Socinski is recognized for his research focused on the development of novel treatments and biomarkers for patients with lung cancer. He earned his MD, as well as an MS in pathology and BA in zoology, from the University of Vermont (UVM). He served on the faculty of the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont and UVM in 1989 until joining UNC at Chapel Hill in 1995.
UTMB at Galveston Names Division Director for Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Nicholas G. Verne, MD, has been appointed division director for gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB). He will also serve as associate chairman for academic affairs and as Blanton Distinguished Professor of Internal Medicine. He joins UTMB from The Ohio State University Medical Center, where he was chief of adult gastroenterology.
Dr. Verne is an expert in gastrointestinal motility disorders and visceral pain, and is recognized for his innovative studies on central and peripheral hypersensitivity/hyperalgesia in irritable bowel syndrome. He was recognized at this year's American Gastroenterology Association Meeting with a Master's Award in Gastroenterology for outstanding achievement in basic and clinical digestive sciences. He earned his MD at the State University of New York in Syracuse and completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He completed residency in Internal Medicine at Albany Medical College.
UVA Names Department of Family Medicine Chair
Norman M. Oliver, MD, has been appointed chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine. Dr. Oliver also serves as director of the UVA Center on Health Disparities, UVA School of Medicine Associate Dean for Diversity, and Associate Professor of Family Medicine, Health Evaluation Sciences, and Anthropology. He is the Director and Principal Investigator of the UVA Summer Medical-Dental Education Program, which is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
Dr. Oliver earned his MD at Case Western Reserve University in 1994. His research interests include health disparities, cancer control and prevention, and clinically applied anthropology. He completed residency in family medicine at University Hospitals of Cleveland, and subsequently served as a family physician in a rural Eskimo fishing village in Alaska for 2 years prior to joining UVA.
New Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology Appointed at Stanford
Quynh-Thu Le, MD, has been named Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Stanford School of Medicine. She succeeds Richard Hoppe, MD, who served as chair since 1994. Dr. Le's research is focused on the biology of head, neck, and lung cancers, particularly as it pertains to the characterization of biomarkers to predict patient outcomes.
Dr. Le earned her MD from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in 1993. As the top graduate in her class, she was honored with the Sadie E. Berkove MD Fellowship. As the top-graduating woman, she received the Janet M. Glasgow Memorial Award. She completed residency in Radiation Oncology at UCSF before joining the faculty at Stanford in 1998. She has served as Director of Clinical Research since 2005 and became a full professor in 2007. She is active in numerous professional societies and organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology, the American Radium Society, and the American Association for Cancer Research. Dr. Le is a three-time recipient of the Henry Kaplan Memorial Prize for Resident Education.
UTSW Medical School Names Associate Dean for Education
George Lister, MD, has been appointed Associate Dean for Education at the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical School. He will step down as chairman of the Department of Pediatrics, a position he held for eight years. Julio Perez Fontan, MD, Associate Dean for Pediatric Services and Program Development at UT Southwestern and Executive Vice President of Medical Affairs at Children's Medical Center, will assume the interim post.
Dr. Lister's research has focused on oxygen transport during postnatal development. He is also interested in academic development, and has directed a training grant sponsored by the National Institutes of Health for nearly three decades. He is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and is a past president of the American Pediatric Society and the Society for Pediatric Research. In 2004, he was recognized by the Society for Pediatric Research with the Maureen Andrew Mentorship Award. In 2011, he received the Joseph W. St. Geme Jr. Leadership Award from the Federation of Pediatric Organizations. Dr. Lister earned his MD at Yale School of Medicine.
University of Colorado Names Peter W. Shaughnessy Endowed Chair
Eric A. Coleman, MD, MPH, has been named as the Peter W. Shaughnessy Endowed Chair and Division Head of Health Care Policy and Research at the University of Colorado. Dr. Coleman joined the University of Colorado in 1998 in the Division of Geriatrics. Upon its creation in 2002, he joined the division of Health Care Policy and Research, and has held positions as the Assistant or Associate Division Head since 2003. He has been serving as Interim Division Head since December 2009.
A leader in health services research, Dr. Coleman developed the field of transition of care research. He serves as the Principal Investigator of several grants, and is supported by the John A. Hartford Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Atlantic Philanthropies. He has served as Chair of the Advisory Board for the Society of Hospital Medicine Care Transitions Project. Dr. Coleman is the Executive Director of the Practice Change Fellows Program, designed to build leadership capacity among health care professionals who are responsible for geriatric programs and service lines.
Dr. Coleman earned his MD at the University of California, San Francisco. He completed residency at the University of Washington. He was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar and completed a Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at the University of Washington as well.
OSU College of Medicine Names Interim Vice Dean
Robert Ruberg, MD, Professor of Surgery and Senior Vice Chairman for Academic and Administrative Affairs in the Department of Surgery, has been appointed interim vice dean of The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Medicine. He has been a member of the OSU faculty since 1975. He has served on the College of Medicine's Executive Curriculum Committee for nearly two decades, and was the committee chair from 1985 until 1998.
Dr. Ruberg is a past president of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, and past chair of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Residency Review Committee for Plastic Surgery. During his tenure at OSU, he has also served on the college admissions committee, the MedIII/IV committee and the academic review board.
Dr. Ruberg's research interests include plastic surgery education and curriculum development. His specialty interests are breast surgery and pediatric plastic surgery. He earned his MD degree from Harvard Medical School and completed specialty training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
